Northbound 03:16
I'm northbound again This time I'm all alone May skies turn red As I lose service on my phone I'm running in place It feels like the summer's ended I would have said it sooner But I decided to pretend This drive goes on forever, I think I'll never leave The sun's gone through the window, burned my arm up to the sleeve So I have to pull over, get outside, and wonder where it's all gone wrong And before long... I won't know which way leads home I won't know which way leads home I don't know which way leads home
2.
Can we just stop for a second? I'm falling behind With all of these questions and wasted time And if we're being honest, I'm so tired Of being ironic & walking a thin wire I know your friends don't like me anymore But lately all I've done is sit and think about what you told me About the night before With my head right next to yours Did you get some sleep the night before October? I can't say if I'm fine 'cause I don't really know But I don't say much more Would you care to know? And now I'm back in the cold, I'm losing it slow You wanted to know where I had gone The ones that you told are wearing me down You wanted to know the things that we'd lost it's a shame that you're gone it's a shame that you're gone it's a shame that you're gone You wanted to know The hands that you hold the night before October
3.
Pines 02:46
Can this be so unfamiliar? You're the best I'd ever had But what happens when we have to leave? I get up off the floor and move myself through the cabin door How can nowhere feel like home? Feet in the water, it's so cold And when I fall asleep The pines are all I see And if I lie awake There was no more of me to take And when the morning comes, I obey 'cause there was nothing left to say
4.
Ten Minutes 03:09
You said goodbye That was never my style 'cause I don't want to waste The best years of my life So I got up at dawn and I made my way west Packed all of my things and hoped that time would take care of the rest Now I'm driving your car Through the city at dusk Through our time together We were always running out of luck So this is where it begins & where it all ends So tired for so long Ten minutes to do it all wrong So tired for so long Ten minutes to do it all wrong, do it all wrong, we did it all wrong

about

~when one goes north, it is to live simpler, feel better, and understand more while thinking less~

Serious thanks to:

- Kevin Andrews, for making this whole thing happen. He allowed me to set up shop at his house to record the whole EP, as well as mixing and mastering everything. This EP is simply not possible without him. Definitely a couple KT chicken sandwiches going his way.
- Wyatt Moran, for picking up the drums on short notice and delivering a fantastic performance.
- Peter del Castillo, for writing and recording his own bass lines on the fly and making it sound better than any bass line I've ever written. I had written some simple bass tracks for the demos, but Peter completely blew my expectations away. I've still never met him (S/O Kevin [again] for getting us connected), but the man is seriously talented.
- Dylan & Jack Hilliker, Ryan Christopherson, Sam Schutz, and Gavin Sparks, for giving honest critiques when I needed them most. I have an issue with deciding what's good or bad work, and they helped me move forward with good ideas and to leave the bad ideas behind.
- The people I played live music with (Dylan Hilliker, Wyatt Moran, Lucas Jahns, Ryan Christopherson, Sam Schutz), for always keeping up with my disorganized self and keeping the live music sounding great.

I see this EP as a marker for the personal end of an era. The release of Northbound coincides (unintentionally) with a recent deterioration in my mental health, and I want to use this moment as a pivot towards better days. Northbound is the final reflection on being juvenile - the final time I release music that isn't truly up to par. These songs are more carefully crafted than my previous work, but there's still many moments where I wish I had the ability to include more nuance, specifically in lyrics. Musically, it's a step forward, but it's not the final step of the journey. Thank you for supporting/listening/believing in me, and I will be back soon with music that I can truly be proud of.
